The Legacy of King Ezana and the Ethiopian Bible

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has the largest biblical canon of any Christian tradition, containing 88 books in total. This unique collection preserves ancient texts that have been cherished for centuries, including the Books of Enoch, Jubilees, and the Maccabees, which provide deep insight into the faith of our forefathers.

This Ge'ez & English translation is known as the King Ezana Version, completed in the 4th century AD. It represents one of the oldest continuous biblical traditions in Christendom.

👑 King Ezana the Great (c. 320–360 AD)

King Ezana was the first monarch in history to inscribe the cross on his coins, a bold public declaration of his newfound faith. His accomplishments include:

The Tewahedo (meaning "made one") tradition emphasizes the united nature of Christ—fully God and fully man. This theological heritage is reflected in our liturgy, art, and Scripture, preserved through the vision of King Ezana and the faithful scribes who followed.

Historical Timeline

1st C. AD

Baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch

The treasurer of Queen Candace is baptized by Philip, bringing the Gospel to Ethiopia (Acts 8).

4th C.

King Ezana's Conversion

King Ezana declares Christianity the state religion. The Ge'ez translation of the Bible (the "King Ezana Version") is completed.

6th C.

The Nine Saints

Nine monks (the "Nine Saints") arrive from Syria, translating many biblical and liturgical texts into Ge'ez and founding monasteries.

1950s

Modern Amharic Translations

Amharic translations become widely available, making Scripture accessible to more believers.
